Origins of Toasts
A toast is a ritual where a drink is taken to honor a person on their special day. It is a message of of goodwill and best wishes to a person. We raise our glass towards the person, say a few words, and then clink the glasses with each other, and take a drink.

They are generally offered at times of celebration - a birthday, or a wedding. We use them especially at New Years. A toast can be used for any special occasion to salute the event.

There are specific occasion ones, and then they are general ones. One of our favorite general ones has been around for years: "May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live." You could use this one for a birthday, a wedding, a good bye party.

When giving a toast, we usually stand. Get people's attention by tapping on a glass. The guest of honor is then addressed with the words. Usually at the end, the rest of the party says, "hear, hear". You should never put down your glass until you take a sip.

Traditionally toasts are done with an alcoholic beverage, however that does not need to be the case. You can use any type of drink. The only exception is that you should never toast with water.

You can use quotes and poems to also recognize a person. Make the quote or poem fit the person. If possible, you should always cite the source of the poem or quote.

The most important thing is to use words that speak specifically to the person you wish to honor. Make them sincere and relevant to the person. Best wishes are often expressed in many ways. You can also use toasts, poems, and quotes in your birthday cards or email greetings - they just add that special touch.

Birthday Wishes To Share

Years come and go
You of all people know
but today is your day
so live it up and celebrate

A birthday comes but once a year
And we don't want you to shed a tear
Here's to you on your special day
Your a living legend we do say

May your years be counted
Not by your age
But by how you spend your days

Here's to you, as old as you are,
And here's to those who are older,
And may the younger know,
The age we are at is beginning to show.

May this coming year bring with it
Success in your goals
Happiness you wish for
And wisdom to bless you

We tip our glasses to you
Hoping your age has not got you blue
We love you today not matter what the age
You have to remember you are at another stage

As the years go by everything changes
And you keep changing for the better -
Here's to you!

A birthday is just the first day
Of another 365-day journey
Around the sun.
Enjoy the trip.

Today is your birthday
And we all say
May wishes and dreams
Be part of your day.

May you have miles of smiles
In the coming year
We wish only the best for you today
And throughout the coming year

If we had one wish for you
On this special day it would be
May the best of your past
be the worst of your future
